Ask clearly.
Give them a choice.
A thoughtful request gives the person enough context, time, and room to say whether they can write a strong letter.
“Would you feel comfortable writing me a strong and specific letter of recommendation?”
This wording helps you learn whether the person can genuinely support your application—not merely whether they are willing to submit something.

Subject: Law School Recommendation Request
Dear Professor [Last Name],
I hope you are doing well. I am preparing to apply to law school this [season/year], and I am writing to ask whether you would feel comfortable writing me a strong and specific letter of recommendation.
I especially valued [course, project, role, or experience] and your guidance on [specific detail]. I believe you could speak to my [writing, analytical ability, growth, reliability, classroom contributions, or another quality they directly observed].
My earliest application deadline is [date], so I would be happy to send a short recommendation packet with my résumé, goals, our work together, and all submission details. I completely understand if your schedule does not allow you to write the letter.
Thank you for considering my request.
Best,
[Your full name]
Asking in person
Have the conversation—then send the details.
“I’m applying to law school this fall, and I learned a great deal through your [class/role]. Would you feel comfortable writing me a strong and specific recommendation? My earliest deadline is [date], and I can send an organized packet with everything you would need.”
After they agree, email the packet and deadline information so they do not have to rely on memory.
Before asking
Four things to confirm.
Ask at least six to eight weeks before the earliest deadline whenever possible.
Be ready to state the earliest due date and how the letter will be submitted.
A hesitant response lets you choose a recommender who can advocate more fully.
